5 Q & A Tips to Help Prevent Burn-out this Festive Season

Bodi Wellness Happy-11

When your system is stressed there’s a tendency to focus on the issue which can limit access to your resources, so here’s a few tips to help you sail through the Festive Season a little easier.

What is your body telling you?

Spend a couple of minutes and ask:

  • How do you feel right now?
  • How is your breathing?
  • Where do you feel tense?
  • Where do you feel great? Yes, you will feel great somewhere, even if it’s just your big toe J
  • What do you need to do, right now?

Move your body - Research has shown walking on a cobbled or rough surface for thirty minutes a day lowers blood pressure and overall improves balance.

Breathe deeply from your belly – Shallow breathing (or breathing from your chest and raising your shoulders) means you are getting very little air into your lungs. Shallow breathing creates more stress on the body and more stress can also cause shallow breathing.  Imagine taking your breath all the way down to your feet. Practice breathing in to the count of 4, hold for 1, and breathe out to the count of 5 as you do, make sure your belly is rising and not your chest. An easy way to do this is lay down, place one hand on your chest and the other hand on your belly and only have your belly rising.

Hydrate – yes you’ve heard it before. Stay hydrated, because when you are stressed you are likely to lose more fluid due to taxing the body’s response to stress, i.e. nausea, headaches, aches and pains.

Relax – Trying to relax the entire mind and body all at once may only make you feel more tense, so a fun exercise that works is Chi Kung  ‘Monkey Shake, which I also encourage my clients to use to release any tension. I call it ‘Shake it out.’  How you do this is stand, feet hip width apart, knees soft and arms hanging lose by your sides. Now literally start shaking up and down to start with, then as time progresses your body will take on its own rhythm – allow it!

Sleep on it – Pretty darn hard if you are struggling to relax, though the tips above are likely to help. Remember to turn off your mobile and other devices J
